Generations
at Work: A
practical guide for leading and managing the blending (or some say crash and chaos)
of Baby Boomers, GenXers, Gen Yers and Millenials in the multi-generational. multi-cultural,
multi-ethnic, high-tech, international workplace. Background:
I was born in 1951,
the 'almost' typical boomer. When I touched my first computer keyboard in 1968,
I was hooked. After college, the service, and engineering school, I built my first
computer in 1977, wrote my first program in 1980, by 1982 I was operating databases
and by 1987, I became one of the nations published, go-to experts on them.
My specialty: I was a systems engineer with business degrees and a strong HR background,
so I could translate tech talk into English for business people.
In 1995 I attended one of the first 'The New Internet' seminars and I saw the
light. I had been using the Internet since the mid 80's, and passing resumes around
for the Pentagon, and Department of Defense for defense contractors, but now the
whole game has changed and so did the business models.
In 1998 I co-founded I-MEG - The Internet Marketing E-commerce Group. That's when
I experienced the clash of Baby Boomers, GenXers, Gen Yers and Millenials, in
our workplace. That's when I realized our companies had to change, or die. So
change we did! At a growth rate of over 25% per year.
Designed for: CEO's,
business owners, franchisees, boards of directors and business leaders
Purpose: Introduce
the generations: who they are, how they view the world of work, and which factors
shaped their perspective. Discusses management principles that can be effectively
used in recruiting, motivating, and retaining generational employees.

If you just read this and have no idea what I'm talking about, then chances are,
you're not part of the new generation. Actually, in age, I am not part of it either,
but I was accepted and adopted by them because I made the commitment to learn
it. I was able to connect with Generation X and Y and the Millenials. And to borrow
a line from Sir Paul McCartney (who was in a band before Wings . . .) It's a Magical
Mystery Tour! Topics
covered:
What you really need to know
Where to start
How to make it work
Who can and will assist you And
a long list of resources and references to keep you headed in the right direction.
The point is, with approximately 49 million text messaging, Bluetoothing, pho-hawk
wearing, DVRing, Blackberry multitaskers, we all need to learn, accept and adapt.
OK,
so Gen X is 49 million, and the younger Generation Y, or Millenials, are 73 million
strong and even more tech savvy. They are the future, and we need to understand
and connect with them at their speed. If
you think I'm wrong, just watch a teenager play a video game - any video game.
And if you really want to feel old, just challenge the kid to a round. As computers
become faster and more powerful, games, applications and life in general has the
potential to become more complex and interactive.
